Reflection
Mondriaan & Liu Ye
For Chinese artist Liu Ye the fact that the Mondriaanhuis is located in the former school building where artist Piet Mondriaan was born, was the reason to exhibit his own work in this very place. His fascination for Mondriaan is very strong. Liu admires Mondriaan’s work greatly, but is not afraid to admit that Mondriaan’s principles do not fit in with his own theories about art. It is radical abstraction in particular that fascinates Liu.
In 1992 Liu made his first work that referred to Mondriaan. In the paintings from that period Mondriaan’s works were literally part of his compositions. In later work Liu expressed his fascination with Mondriaan in a different way, but the influence of his world-famous predecessor always remained visible.
Mondriaan & Liu Ye is Liu Ye’s first important solo exhibition in Netherlands. With the cooperation of private collectors from Asia, Europe and North America, a one-off selection will be shown of his colourful oeuvre from 10 June onward. The exhibition will show the deeply-rooted admiration of Liu Ye for the Dutch master of abstract art and their polyphonic relations.
