Biography
Born in 1977 in Fujian, Pak Sheung Chuen immigrated to Hong Kong in 1984 and graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2002. He lives and works in Hong Kong.
Pak Sheung Chuen’s playful work slyly alters the experience of everyday life. He explores, on the one hand, the mental and social “space” between everything that is structured, routine, and stable in our world, and on the other, he investigates coincidence, chance encounters, the arbitrary, and the imaginative. In so doing, he reveals artistic moments in everyday life and brings to the fore the interwoven nature of reality and the imaginary. He prefers to use himself and his writings as a medium, conceiving his works as actions or subtle manipulations of the regular course of events. In most cases these performative actions have no audience; rather, they consist of journeys and self-experiments that engage with ever-changing environments.
Pak recent solo exhibition including Two Exhibitions, Para Site Art Space, Hong Kong (2017); That Light, Mirrored Garden, Guangzhou (2016); Traveler's Notes: San Antonio 2013.5.28-2013.7.14, Artpace San Antonio, San Antonio (2013). Pak represented Hong Kong at the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009 with his solo presentation Making (Perfect) World. His Page 22 is permanently installed in New York’s 58th Street Branch Library as a result of self-organised action. He has participated in international exhibitions and biennials, including: Busan Biennale 2016 Busan Biennale Project 2: Hybridizing Earth, Discussing Multitude, F1963(KISWIRE Suyeong Factory), Busan (2016); Liverpool Biennial 2012, Tate Liverpool, Liverpool (2012); Taipei Biennial 2010, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Taipei (2010); Biennale Cuvee 10, OK Center for Contemporary Art, Linz (2010); The 3rd Yokohama Triennale, Shinko Pier, Yokohama (2008); The 3rd Guangzhou Triennial, Guangzhou Museum of Art, Guangzhou (2008); China Power Station: Part II, Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, Oslo (2007); The 6th Busan Biennale, Busan Contemporary Museum, Busan (2006), etc.
